敦賀港直送の魚介を扱う鮮魚店や、寿司・海鮮丼など飲食店が軒を連ねます。
福井県鯖江市は日本一の眼鏡の産地。多数の鯖江産眼鏡を販売するショップや、自分の眼鏡が作れる工房もあります。
日本で唯一の竹人形の展示館です。歌舞伎などを題材にした竹人形が多数みられるほか、体験もできます。
開湯130年の歴史を誇る福井県随一の温泉街。あわら湯のまち駅前の広場には足湯や屋台村などが建ち並びます。伝統芸能館では、芸妓・舞妓変身体験や実際に芸妓さんに教えてもらいながら、太鼓の演奏やお座敷遊びが気軽に体験できます。
世界三大恐竜博物館の一つで、広大な空間には、恐竜骨格や化石標本、実物大のジオラマなどが多数展示されています。「野外恐竜博物館」では恐竜化石が発見された地層の近くで、実際に化石発掘体験ができます。
旧福井藩主・松平家の別邸で優美な書院建築と庭園は、江戸中期を代表する貴重な名園の一つです。
品質が高く、ヨーロッパなどで人気を得ている越前打刃物。包丁やはさみなどを販売するほか、工房が併設されており、鍛冶・研ぎ職人による迫力ある包丁製作の様子が見学できます。また、包丁づくりなどの体験も可能です。
国内で生産される塗箸の80%を占める若狭塗箸。館内では伝統工芸士の実演を見ることができるほか、実際に箸研ぎ体験をすることもできます。
1500年の伝統をもつ「越前漆器」。うるしの里会館では、職人が漆器を作る様子が見られるほか、体験も可能です。
日本六古窯の一つ「越前焼」のふるさと。「資料館」、「陶芸教室」、「茶苑」の3つの施設からなり、体験コースでは越前焼の粘土を使って自由に陶芸体験が楽しめます。
自分で漉いた和紙に押し花や染料などで色を付け、はがきや名刺、コースターなど好きな形にすることができます。
古い商家や町家、さらに茶屋建築の千本格子、2階の縁や出窓を持つ建造物が建ち並びます。
北海道や大阪を結ぶ貨物船「北前船」の寄港地として隆盛を極め、格子戸が連なる町家や豪商の面影が残る商家などがあり、古い町並みに当時の賑わいを感じることができます。
かつて、福井県若狭地域から京都には多くの魚介類が運ばれ、「鯖街道」と呼ばれました。その宿場町として栄えた熊川宿には、今でも番所など当時の様式の建物が建ち並び、昔ながらの用水路が流れています。
1471年から103年間にわたりこの地を支配した戦国大名・朝倉氏の広大な城下町跡。特別史跡、特別名勝、重要文化財の三重指定を受けています。戦国時代の鎧兜や着物などの着付け体験(体験料/500円)も可能です。
世界遺産「紀伊山地の霊場と参詣道」の構成資産「熊野参詣道小辺路」沿いにある小さな集落です。壮大な果無山脈を見渡せる高地に位置していることから「天空の郷」とも呼ばれ、にほんの里100選にも選ばれています。晴天の日の眺めはもちろん、雨が降った時の霧が立ち上る山々も見どころです。
修験道の大峯山内第一の行場とされる龍泉寺を中心にして、大峯信仰の登山基地として栄えた洞川温泉には、たくさんの旅館や民宿・お土産物店お食事処が軒を連ね温泉街を形づくっています。大峯の修行シーズン(5月から9月)には山伏の吹く法螺貝の音が山々にこだまします。村営の「洞川温泉センター」をはじめ各旅館にも配湯された温泉は、入浴後はお肌がさっぱり、すべすべになると喜ばれています。
五條新町が生まれたのは、今から約400年前、関ヶ原の戦いの後、江戸幕府が成立してすぐの頃にさかのぼります。 江戸時代から現在にかけて、それぞれの時代の建造物が残る新町通は建築年代の判るものでは日本最古の民家があるなど、国から重要伝統的建造物群保存地区として指定されております。
秀峰大山(だいせん)を望む西日本最大級のフラワーパーク。園内をぐるりと一周する周囲一キロの屋根付き展望回廊があり、天候にかかわらず四季折々の花を楽しむことができます。
写真家 植田正治氏の貴重な作品を展示する美術館。作品と調和する建物自体がひとつの作品となっています。被写体をオブジェのように配置する作風は、「Ueda-Cho(植田調)」として世界的に評価されています。
伝統的建造物群保存地区に指定されている板井原集落。深緑の杉林の谷間に隠れ里のように広がる集落には、かやぶき屋根の古民家群、分校、神社、川の流れを利用した水車小屋、炭焼き小屋等々、日本の山村集落の原風景がそっくりそのまま残っています。
500年以上の伝統を持つ淡路の伝統芸能、淡路人形浄瑠璃を毎日上演する常設館。3人で1つの人形を操る技術は長年のトレーニングの賜物。淡路特有の文化や歴史にふれることができます。
SPring-8とは、直径約450m、1周約1,500mのナノテクノロジーやバイオテクノロジー等の研究に利用できる世界最高性能の放射光を生み出す大型施設です。展示室の自由見学のほか、見学ツアーも行っています。
1609年徳川家康の命により築かれた篠山城跡と、篠山城築城後商業の中心として栄えた昔の町並みが残る河原町妻入商家群では昔の雰囲気を感じることができます。
花と緑をモチーフに、温室・花壇・庭園などで構成された夢いっぱいの施設。展望レストラン、野外劇場、リゾートホテルなども併設され、快適性もエンターテイメント性も申し分なしです。建築家安藤忠雄の建築にも注目。
神戸の灘五郷
地域の芸能として江戸時代から継承されてきた「能勢の浄瑠璃」をキーワードに93年に設立された劇場です。毎年6月には地域住民により形成された「能勢人形浄瑠璃鹿角座(ろっかくざ)」定期公演が開催され、その他、多ジャンルのアーティストの公演も行っています。 また、ロビーでは、ビデオの放映や常設展示もあり、事前に連絡をいただきますと、人形に触れたり、写真撮影を行うこともできます。
1970年の日本万国博覧会(大阪万博)の会場跡地に、文化・スポーツ・レクリエーション・レジャー施設を兼ね備えた「緑に包まれた文化公園」で大阪を代表する公園です。博覧会当時から今もその姿をとどめる太陽の塔や日本庭園をはじめ、園内では四季折々の草花が楽しめるほか、1年を通して様々なイベントも開催しています。
Wild hardy kiwi vines (approximately 5 tons) are used to make this vine bridge, which is 45m long, 2m wide, and 14m above the water. In olden times, it was used as an important part of the local road in this deep valley. Nationally Designated Important Folk Cultural Asset.
The difference in sea level in the Naruto Strait when the tide ebbs and flows creates intense currents, including whirlpools that can reach up to 20 meters in diameter. One of the three big tidal currents in the world, the deafening roar of the whirlpools and the swirling spectacle is magnificent to see. The whirlpools appear for about one and a half hours before and after low and high tide every day.
From the Edo period to the Meiji period, "Awa Ai" indigo was traded here, in this streetscape full of merchant houses. On the second floor between buildings, extended walls called "udatsu" were built. At first they were built to prevent fires from spreading, but they quickly became a point of ornamental competition between houses, giving rise to the idiom "udatsu ga agaranai" meaning someone who can't get ahead in the world. In 1988, it was one of 28 places designated as an Important Group of Traditional Buildings.
Approximately 800 years ago, the Heike clan used Mt. Tsurugi as a place to train their horses, and these vine bridges were used to travel there. Now it is a passage to the Oku-Iya Kazura Vine Bridge Campground. There are two bridges side-by-side, so they are nicknamed the "Man's Bridge and Women's Bridge", or the "Husband and Wife Bridge". Beside the Women's Bridge is a man-powered ropeway that crosses the river, called a "yaen".
In the deep, V-shaped gorge, the emerald green Iya River flows, and looking down from above is sure to make your head spin. In the autumn, the mountain is full of fall leaves from the bottom of the valley to the peaks, and visitors peek out at the sight from cars and buses. On a cliff overlooking the Iya River, a rock left from building the road sticks out, and on top of the rock, a statue of a peeing boy stands, as a physical representation of anecdotes about local children and travelers testing their courage.
Togenkyo Iya's mountain hamlet folk home stay. Even in the remote Iya Valley, this spot is even more remote. Folk homes in Ochiai, a picturesque hamlet in Higashi-iya were renovated and opened as accommodation facilities in 2012. Guests can chose to enjoy simple local family cuisine as an option. The smiles of local motherly hosts will surely help guests forget the hustle and bustle of city life.
Hiwasa Chelonian Museum Caretta (Ohama Beach, Minami, Kaifu District, Tokushima Prefecture)

One of the few sea turtle museums in the world. See living sea turtles in a giant aquarium! Events are sometimes held to release baby sea turtles hatched in the museum into the sea. A valuable place to get close to sea turtles.
A scene that seems to be trapped in time. White plaster walls, and burned black cedar slats, gently curved little stone bridges, and red Sekishu roof tiles.
At Nashinohana Hot Spring area, along the banks of Togoike Pond, stands Japan's largest authentic Chinese garden. Built to commemorate the friendship between Tottori Prefecture and Hebei Province in China, the building, paintings, rocks and plants are all brought from China and placed again here. Used as a location for shooting films and TV programs, and in recent years it has hosted Chinese costume contests, enjoying popularity as a destination for cosplayers.
Mt. Utsubuki, the symbol of Kurayoshi City, Tottori Prefecture, features Utsubuki Park its foot, with beautiful blossoming cherry trees in early April. The reflection at night of the cherry blossoms in Hagoromo Pond is wonderful. After cherry blossoms come the azaleas, which are also very beautiful. This gathering point for the city's citizens has been chosen as one of Japan's 100 famous spots for cherry blossoms, one of Japan's 100 best city parks, and one of the 100 best spots for forest therapy. Hasedera Temple, which was built during the Muromachi era, and the Edo era merchant's houses that line the Tama River, and the white-walled and black burned cedar warehouses make it a great spot for a stroll.
The highest peak in the Chugoku region, National Park Mt. Daisen is a famous picturesque spot. The towering cliffs and the giant beech forests stretching below are a breathtaking sight. In particular, when the new leaves come out in May, and when the colorful autumn leaves turn in late October and early November, it is particularly beautiful. The spot is loved by travel journalist Kaoru Kanetaka and world-class nature photographer Yoshikazu Shirakawa.
Surrounded by eight peaks, it is as if Mt. Koya is surrounded by the petals of a lotus. Kobo Daishi (Kukai) opened the mountain as the basic training place for Shingon Buddhist secret teaching. Even today, many monks continue the teachings of Kukai, and continue to do ascetic training here. There are 52 pilgrims lodgings on the mountain, and visitors can experience the history and culture of Mt. Koya through vegetarian Buddhist cuisine or by attending a Buddhist religious service.
Ever since the local train line connecting Wakayama City and Kinokawa City got attention for having a cat for a station master, visitors have come from around Japan and abroad to visit Wakayama Railways' Kishi Station. The station has a cafe and Tama-related items on sale. Catch a ride on the Tama train, and everything will be "Tama World". Recently, "Nitama Station Master" has appeared at Itakiso Station, and its popularity is growing.
The Nachi Katsuura Fishing Port boasts the largest volume of non-frozen bluefin tuna in Japan. Visitors can view the bluefin auctions, and can enjoy fresh bluefin as sashimi and in other dishes at the restaurants, hotels, and inns in the town.
The Kitan Strait is home to four islands: Jinoshima, Torajima, Kamishima, and Okinoshima. They are collectively known as Tomogashima. Regular boats leave from Kada port, and arrive at Okinoshima in approximately 20 minutes, where a hiking course that tours the fort remains is popular. Additionally, the western edge of island that cross through the meridian line of Japanese Standard Time (135 degrees east longitude) is home to the eighth white western-style lighthouse built in Japan, that helps to protect the comings and goings of ships in the strait even today.
This actual-sized monument (18 meters tall) is based on the popular Japanese manga/anime "Tetsujin 28-go" and is a popular photo spot with young people. Nearby find the "Three Kingdoms Garden" an exhibition hall based on the Chinese legend, Three Kingdoms.
This flower-focused event is held in the Chuo ward of Kobe, including Sannomiya Higashi, Motomachi Anamon, Nishi Motomachi, Kitanozaka venues. Infiorata is an Italian word that means "blanket with flowers". Farmers in places like Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture, provide flower petals that have been picked in order to grow bulbs, and the unneeded petals are recycled in order to create beautiful flower pictures.
The magnificence of the world's longest suspension bridge, the Akashi Kaikyo Ohashi. The length of the space between the pillars on the Akashi Kaikyo Ohashi is the longest in the world. There are many places to view the elegance of the bridge's shape, and at night when it is lit-up, but the best place to truly experience the size of the bridge and the fusion of nature and the massive man-made architectural structure, is the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Park directly adjacent to the bridge. It also has historical appeal, and is an ideal addition to a new one hundred Kansai views. (There is also a tour where visitors can experience a 360 degree panoramic view from the top of the bridge's pillar at Bridge World from April to November (every week from Thursday to Sunday, and on Holidays))
This beautiful beach with white sand and green pines, is a recreation zone loved by many, and as it is the closest swimming beach to the Osaka-Kobe area it is busy with tourists and beach huts every summer. It also holds many events such as the beach volleyball tournament, and it is popular with the younger generation as well as families. Surf music giants The Beach Boys even wrote a song about this beach, called Sumahama.
Chikusa has been a producer of a kind of washi paper called Harimagami since the Nara period. Currently, there is just one shop in the town that continues to make washi paper today, but the high quality paper can only be made in this place with its well-preserved natural surroundings. The shop continues to maintain tradition, passing down skills through the ages.
This spring, the first theme park in West Japan to feature the anime hero loved by Japanese children, Anpanman, opened in Kobe. Children can play on the colorful playground equipment, and eat special limited edition bread and snacks shaped like the anime characters at the food court. There are plenty of Anpanman-themed souvenirs available, and it's a spot the whole family can enjoy. The facility is located near Kobe's bay area, and there are also other shopping malls nearby.
