Urushi-Bake

It was around the 12th century when brushes were first used to varnish Buddha images or Buddhist altar fittings with lacquer, it is said that this was the origin of the present style of Urushi-bake.
The technique for making this brush was introduced to Osaka from Kyoto in Meiji 18 (1885).
One of the unique characteristics of this style of brush is the bristle made of human hair held in place by the whole stem of the brush and which must be shaved while being used.
