Taiko (Drum)
In Echigawa town, tanning work and drum making have been carried on since the Edo period (1600-1868) using the pure water from the Echi river.
Cow skin is considered the best material for drum making.
The skin is bleached and tanned in the river for a month before the hair is removed, after which it is dried naturally.
Craftspeople use Keyaki wood for the cylinder of the drum.
