Shigaraki-yaki Pottery

Shigaraki-yaki is one of the six oldest kilns in Japan and its origin is said to be from the time when the people made Nunome tiles for the Imperial villa which was erected by Emperor Shomu during the Tempyo period (729-749), A natural clear glaze, a deep-red glaze like fire and an ashy glaze characterize Shigaraki-yaki.
The main products are large pieces which suit the local clay as well as various utensils for daily use.
