The scenic Kii Mountains, together with Yoshino-omine, Kumano-sanzan, and Koyasan - called the sanctuary of gods in seclusion-constitute a harmonious cultural landscape.
With sacred sites revered for more than 1,000 years, the Kii Mountains are noted for a holy heritage harmonizing the ways of Gods and Buddha linking ancient Shinto and Buddhism.
"Roads” designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites thus far include only two-this pilgrimage route and that of El Camino de Santiago in Spain.
