Osaka Hariko
Osaka hariko (papier-m?ch?), famous for its tiger figures, has a history stretching back over 400 years.
A papier-m?ch? figure begins as several layers of Japanese paper pasted onto a wooden form.
When the figure has dried, it is removed from the form and painted.
In addition to tigers, papier-m?ch? is used to make daruma dolls, masks and the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.
Tiger figures are particularly popular as good luck charms and as protection against evil spirits, making MINE Shoten busy the year round.
The MINES are also now developing folkcrafts that meet modern tastes and needs and reviving toys of the past.
