Nara Zumi (India Ink)

Like the Nara writing brush, Kobo-Daishi is said to have brought back the method of making India ink from Tang during the Daido period and the monks of Kofukuji temple produced the first India ink from lampblack during the Muromachi period (1333-1568).
This is believed to be the origin of this India inkstick, which is a fine speciality of Nara, closely related to the Imperial Court and temples where a great quantity of ink for copying Sutras and writing statements was required.
