Among the works of art preserved in the Shosoin (the ancient treasury nearby Todaiji temple) are examples of lacquerware representing the essence of Tempyo culture.
Brilliant techniques are evident, such as inlaid mother-of-pearl Covered with lacquer and polished out (Raden), and dry lacquer made of cloth and lacquer (Kanshitsu).
