Kyo Sashimono (Joinery)

Kyo joinery goes back to the Heian period (794-1185).
From the Muromachi period on, professional joiners appeared and this craftwork developed together with the establishment of the tea ceremony culture.
Generally speaking, there are two kinds of joinery; furniture joinery Such as high quality Japanese furniture and tea-utensil joinery such as hikimono (turnery) and magemono (round chip box).
Kiri (paulownia) is one of the representative materials.
Kyo joinery is characterized by fine elaboration which, by Working with the beautiful grain, makes the most use of its material.
