kabuki
The word "kabuki" comes from the verb kabuku, meaning to dress in very unusual clothes.
Kabuki performances originated from among the common people in the early Edo period (1603 - 1867).
Going against the many rules on dress, occupation, and activities mandated by the Edo government, kabuki borrowed its music, stories, and entertaining elements freely from Noh drama and Bunraku puppet play.
Today's kabuki was developed during the Genroku era between the late 1600s and the early 1700s in Edo period, when townspeople's culture grew and spread throughout Kamigata, currently Kyoto and Osaka.
Kabuki still attracts and fascinates audiences, with its picturesque beauty, riotous scenes, and unique actors, spectacular performances, extraordinary costumes, and amazing stage settings.
