Hyogo Butsudan

An artisan who studied the technique for making Buddhist altars in Kyoto, which at that time was the cradle of the Buddhist altar fittings, started subcontracting work from Kyoto during the Edo period (1600?1868).
It is said that this was the origin of Hyogo Butsudan.
Using natural materials, Hyogo Butsudan requires many different craft techniques such as carving, lacquering and leaf pressing, and is still being worked by hand.
