RUGBY WORLD CUP™ PROUD HOST

Hikone Butsudan

The Hikone clan encouraged all local armorers, lacquerers and artisans who had developed high standards of technique to change their occupations to make Buddhist altars and this was the origin of Hikone Butsudan.
On the other hand, Hama Butsudan originally took its shape from Hikiyama, the float used in the Nagahama Hikiyama festival.
Both of these crafts originated in the middle of the Edo period.
