Echizen-washi originates in a legend that a beautiful princess appeared and taught people here the art of making paper some 1,500 years ago.
In the Nara period (710?784), this paper was found to be very useful for copying sutras.
Also especially in the ages of samurai, the Echizen area prospered as the center of making thick high-quality paper such as "Echizen Hosho".
